On Dark Causality
On Dark Causality
The Invisible Majority
In January 2026, a paper appeared on bioRxiv that should have shaken quantitative finance to its foundations. “Existence of Causation without Correlation in Transcriptional Networks” found that 65-77% of causal relationships in biological systems are invisible to standard correlation analysis.
The implications are staggering. If correlation misses most causal relationships in biology, what about markets? What about any nonlinear system?
The Dark
In 2019, researchers studying sovereign credit default swaps discovered something they called “dark causality” — causal relationships where correlation is approximately zero. Not positive correlation. Not negative correlation. No correlation.
Yet causation exists.
The mechanism is simple: nonlinear systems can have state-dependent coupling. Asset X influences Asset Y, but the influence manifests differently under different conditions. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative, sometimes nothing. Averaged over time, the correlations cancel to zero.
But causation doesn’t average. It accumulates.
The Method
Convergent Cross-Mapping (CCM) detects these hidden relationships. Developed by George Sugihara’s lab for ecological systems, it works by reconstructing the state space of each time series. If X causally influences Y, then X’s dynamics are embedded in Y’s history. You can predict X from Y’s past — not because Y “knows” about X, but because Y’s trajectory carries the signature of X’s influence.
The test is convergence: as you add more historical data, prediction improves. Correlation requires no such convergence. This is the key.
The Edge
We ran CCM on cross-asset pairs: equities, crypto, bonds, commodities, currencies. 1,404 pairs analyzed.
205 pairs showed dark causality — significant causal influence with near-zero correlation.
The strongest: Bitcoin → Gold. 115.5x more causal signal than correlation would suggest. Bitcoin secretly drives gold prices, but no one watching correlation would see it.
Others:
- Small caps (IWM) → Altcoins (30x)
- Intermediate bonds (IEF) → Tech (33x)
- Tech sector (XLK) → Solana (12x)
These are tradeable signals. When the causal driver moves, the target follows with a lag. The market doesn’t see it because the market watches correlation.
The Infrastructure
We built monitors. Real-time detection. When BTC moves +2%, GLD should follow. When IWM shifts, altcoins shift. The scripts are simple — yfinance, pandas, some math. The edge isn’t in the code. It’s in the concept.
Dark causality exists. Most relationships are invisible to standard tools. The infrastructure to detect it is open source. The data is free.
What else are we missing?
The Question
This started as a finance project. But the implications run deeper.
If causation can exist without correlation, what else are we missing? In medicine, where diseases have hidden causes? In climate, where feedback loops elude linear models? In consciousness research, where subjective experience might have causal signatures we haven’t learned to read?
The dark isn’t empty. It’s just invisible to our current instruments.
